Following a successful release of the recyclable FREITAG F385 cases for the iPhone® 11 and 12 series, we designed the cases for iPhone® 13, 14 and 15. 11 different versions are available in total, three for iPhone® generation 13 and four each for iPhone® generations 14 and 15.

In collaboration with the manufacturing partner, we developed ways integrate all eleven versions into just four modular injection moulds. The moulds allow for easy conversion to the desired variant with different interchangeable tool inserts. The additional effort in the development stage payed off by saving a significant amount of material, energy and effort in tool production by eliminating seven entire tools.

The key element of the design is an ingenious parametric master CAD
model, from which the individual versions can be derived with minimal
effort. The CAD model incorporates all production-relevant details such
as draft angles as well as considerations regarding tolerances and fits
to the smartphones. It also includes some special features resulting
from the use of special recycled material: a reprocessed TPU obtained
from used ski boots.

Based on discussions with the production partner and FREITAG, Tribecraft developed design adjustments to the case, whose basic design comes from FREITAG. This allows alternative, less complicated demouldings in the tools. Necessary modifications to the product in detail, whose necessity only became apparent during the design of the injection moulds at the porduction partner, are applied to all models with little effort thanks to the modelling strategy.
